Assuming it is an embedded system , I would think  footprint and validating (error free and fool proof) , based on usage of cards .

Again hardware platforms are pretty efficient with their throughput , eg: threading and parallelism . You can check FPGA /Microcontoller vendors  + Linux (or any RTOS)
