Crop rotation which has a high nutrient releasing crop after high nutrient absorbing crop is the general practice... but success depends on crop management - soil, water and fertilizer. Some call crop rotation a method of modern farming, but is is not true.  In India this practice and the whole cropping pattern is distinguishable between food crops and non-food crops and intra-cropping. 

Proper crop rotation is the best means of managing soil productivity, crop yield and managing crop pests. "Proper" here mean is a planned sequence of crops especially cereals-followed by legumes, deep rooted crops followed by shallow rooted crops, intensive tillage requiring crops followed by less or no tillage requiring crops and so on. Similarly, high fertility requiring crops such as vegetables followed by less nutrients requiring crops will help to minimize mining. The overall choice of crop rotation should be aimed at (I) sustaining soil fertility or nutrients balance, (ii) meeting farmer's dietary needs and economic returns and (iii) managing crop pest. Better utilization of residual plant nutrients, biological fixation of nitrogen through legumes and breaking cycle of  the heavy nutrients mining by mono-crops are the major reasons that crop rotation improves soil fertility and improves crop yields.
