Request information on the use of packed clay floors in the United States in the 19th C. The recent discovery of a possible cob floor  fragment (white clay, fine sand, pine straw, wood ash?) at a ca. 1870 upland Louisiana farmstead brings question to how common were these type of floors. Cob construction was common in England and Ireland, even during WWI & II when building materials were hard to come by.
