Harry, just a preliminary and general idea: considering the absorption and scattering properties of EC and OC, respectively, It is possible to use the EC/OC ratio to analyze not only the origin of these aerosols, but also their implications for climate forcing. Thus, high values would indicate the predominance of EC and atmospheric absorption conditions. Low values (less than 1) could indicate high concentrations of OC and predominance of atmospheric scattering conditions.
Harry, what is your opinion about the effective carbon ratio proposed by Safai et al? What are the advantages and disadvantages? (I attached the paper)
