1)Design a Metamaterial which should have real negative index with the same band you required for antenna operation.

2)The metamaterial as substrate and Cover gives better response.

3) As metamaterial usually decreases the resonant frequency of patch antenna .so you have to select patch frequency well.

4)Factor for electrically small antenna should also take in consideration ( chu limit)).

What do you mean precisely by effective utilization of bandwidth?

I wanted to know whether metamaterials can be used for wideband applications.. Am very new to metamaterials, hence am trying to go with either metamaterial in antenna applications or in biomedical applications sir.. Doing literature survey related to this..

Metamaterials such as electronic band gap (EBG) and frequency selective surfaces (FSS) are typically narrow band in relation to ultr-wide band antenna applications. There are some publications relating to work being done to try and find EBG and Hi Z surfaces that are capable of performing over the antenna UWB performance. I think the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to arrive at fractal-like unit cell topologies are maybe a good place to investigate.

MM materials and antenna are different conceptsalthough they can play same role somtimes. The former is bulk one while the antenna is single structure using in local relatively tiny volume.

the properties of MM can be controlled through their permitivity and permeability while the antenna can be controlled by its dimensional size of the structure.

> The frequency of Left handed behaviour of the metamaterial should be same as that of the antenna to be operated in, for best results.

> Metamaterials do not have much wide bandwidth of negative refractive index.

> Use of metamaterial as a cover (superstrate/cover lens) gives a very good response if used in proper operational ranges.

Best way to achieve wide band characteristic through metamaterial is ' Use left handed transmission line (combination of inter-digital capacitor and shunt inductor), these kind of structure works as leaky wave structure. Go through C Caloz and T Itho book on Metamaterials, their are some nice antenna implementations.

But seriously, best application for metamaterial i found is miniaturization of antenna....

embedding matematerial to antenna, is a a technique that potentially to improve the performance of antenna eg. bandwidth, gain, radiation efficiency. It also can reduce the size of radiating patch. TQ =)

metamaterial is basically a substance which shows the negative permittivity and permeability. It is normally used to reduce the size of antenna and which can be further have many applications.

Bandwidth is not a big issue in this..

The key issues of applications of MTM in antenna engineering include operating bandwidth, efficiency and complexity. In general, MTM can be any artificial structures which feature unique EM properties which are not readily found in nature. Based on such understanding, we have developed many high - performance antennas for practical applications not only on papers.
