This is a very interesting and rather complex question that we have partially started to address in an article published in Production Planning and Control in July 2018: Defining and assessing industry 4.0 maturity levels – case of the defence sector.
We would hope that our framework can support firms and government agencies in assessing I4.0 maturity levels. If you have the chance to review it and have any constructive feedback please do get in touch. Good luck.
First of all, thank you for your response Ismail W. R. Taifa
. Yes, I agree with you on this idea. People are usually just talking about it. Governments in particularly underdeveloped or developing countries are only talking about this issue on platforms. Therefore, I try to discuss the issue at the point of enterprises, to measure the awareness levels of employees and managers on this issue and to raise awareness.
Siemens seems to be playing a leading role studying and publishing information on digitization. They find that companies are looking for "proof cases" that describe the ROI that was achieved in a specific adoption case of Industry 4.0. This is important because implementation requires significant capital - a challenge for small and medium sized manufacturers. Companies need to justify this investment to owners, investors, banks, etc. to obtain this capital.
Contrast this with the "lean journey". Lean can be implemented in short bursts (kaizen blitzes) with little out of pocket investment. Implementing 4.0 calls for comprehensive planning and significant investment - a much different paradigm. SMEs need practical assistance with developing these plans. Proof cases and step by step, practical planning guides are important tools to raise awareness. We also need skilled graduates with industrial engineering skills. Unfortunately, I've seen colleges cancel programs in manufacturing technology due to declining demand in the past 20 years.
Thank you Charlie Johnston for your valuable information. I agree with you that we need graduates with the knowledge and skills that use brain power, such as the industrial engineer. In Such quotas of these departments in Turkey had been decreased heavily. Young population prefers sections that are easier and have less brain power. I guess they just don't want to tire themselves out. People are encouraged to become lazy and to be a consumer society through the education system. At this point, it is necessary to take steps towards rearing the generations of generations who prefer to reorganize their education policies and re-use brain power with a tight program.
Thank you Saleh Alyyyahya for your valuable response Saleh Alyahya . I am trying to prepare a survey form for Industry 4.0 Awareness. I added a project for this tonight. I hope, you will read it and share your feedback.
I added a survey form. The aim of this form is to determine the current situation of SMEs, their familiarity with the Concept of Industry 4.0 and their approaches. Please read this survey form and share your feedback with me.
This is a draft study. I'm working on expressions. I think to divide these statements into 3 sub-dimensions: conceptual awareness, enterprise-based awareness and country-based awareness. I plan to do the work on SMEs first. In particular, I set out to raise awareness upon employees and business owners in small-scale enterprises. Thank you Saleh Alyahya for your valuable knowledge

Derived from now 5 years of applied I40 research i can conclude that indirect measures such as the the existence of an I40 roadmap, central I40 coordination or specific I40 budget and more such measured have to be used to measure I40 awareness. Direct measurement such as asking for the level of awareness using likert is mostly biased. We summarized the I40 maturity in a paper where we also measure I40 awareness. Thanks for your valuable sharing Dear @Andreas Schumacher and Dear @Benjamin Dehe. I will read your researches and reply you soon. Thanks again. Best regards.
There is need for a comprehensive model to capture the implementation level of I4.0 in industries. The awareness level can be traced through capturing the parameters of from migration from 3.0 to 4.0 through digitization. Indeed a very interesting topic.
At first, thank you for your response. Which model is needed for industries? -especially for micro and small scale enterprises- How comprehensive model are they need? What is your opinion? Which parameters are important for awareness level according to you?
In my opinion, like we have a quality framework for SMEs one can think of that. The identification of the framework element will be challenging but I guess FA, PCA can help in that. The outcome of such a system must be tested empirically before making general application and scope. Did I made some useful observation Devrim Karademir ? Thanks for engagement...
