I started by a model using 3D PLAXIS to study the effect of deep excavations on existing buildings. The building was simulated as a surface plate with a surface load. Now I'm trying to do it as a whole building, with columns, slabs and a raft foundation, and I'm confused about the columns' definition.
Finally I want to ask about the more reasonable way of building's modeling and the reason behind it, and thank you.

The formation of the model of the building could be done in a usual way (including definition of columns), but here your problem is about the correct modeling of the soil under the existing building.

Nice to know that you would like to study the effect of excavation on the response of adjacent building using PLAXIS3D. In the analysis, use beam element to simulate the column or cylindrical volume element . The building simulation can also be done using the plate element and apply vertical load over it . ok all the best in your research..
It could be modelled the columns by either using beam elements or by using volume elements. The easier option is the beam elements
