When I studied to first & second degree I was sure that both mineralogy and petrology are "superfluous" subjects and students must concentrate more on the geophysical methods. However, life shows that this opinion was erroneous one. Knowledge of petrology and mineralogy strogly helped me when I prepared my PhD Thesis (more than 25 years ago) and enables to obtain now more exact ideas and clear imaging of many geological areas and models.

So basically it is Mineral Physics?

There are currently about 4200 minerals on Earth, but the number has grown

with the evolution of the Earth, Atmosphere, oceans, and Life, Geochemistry,

Biochemistry, etc.

By my calculation the Earth is about 4544.40 +/- 25.98 million years old,

so to Understand the Minerals of the Earth, you need to understand the

very long term evolutionary processes inside and near the surface

of the earth.
