I learned from some papers of hospitals thats some Streptococcus pneumoniae strain are not fit the “Gold characters” of most Streptococcus pneumoniae that are Optochin susceptible and Bile solubility (+). As these case, it is not so confident to confirm the correct name of “Streptococcus pneumoniae” by ordinary biochemical methods and might be missing some positive cases in laboratory rodent specimens .

Different from hospital experiences, the Optochin resistant Strep. pneumoniae can be found by combining the clinical sign of patients and laboratory diagnostic results.  Laboratory rodents which infected Strep. pneumoniae always short of clinical sign.  Non-Strep. pneumoniae alpha-hemolytic streptococci are quite common in laboratory animal respiratory specimens.
