Hi, I'm working on a driving simulator. I have implemented a speed control system; and the outputs from the simulator are throttle input, brake input, steering angle, speed limit of the road, speed of the vehicle and state of the speed control system i.e. on/off. Im logging data every 500ms. What I'm not sure about is that do I have to find an exact study to show that my simulator is valid? or I can do that by my own finding for e.g. if my experiments show difference in speed of the vehicle with and without the system would that be enough, or do I need to find an exact literature to prove it?
Also please does anyone have any idea about what should be the ideal placement of the steering wheel, screen and pedals for the tests are there any rules for that or whatever the driver finds comfortable is ok?
I would recommend comparing your simulator against a real vehicle if possible, and initially performing some standard handling maneouvers e.g. steady-state cornering at increasing speeds (the 'skid-pad' test), straight-line acceleration, and a coast-down test.
If real vehicle data is not available, I would suggest looking for papers which present validated experimental data with known vehicle parameters. A starting point may be Race Car Vehicle Dynamics (Milliken & Milliken) which presents some limited data, with the accompanying vehicle parameters given in the appendix.
The best option would be compare your data with a real car data, but if it is not possible, you could try to use MSC Adams Car / MSC Adams View or CarSim as a tool to compare.
The software simulations results are very accurate.
