I'm supposed to use the EMC equation in a study of the variation of the COD concentration in urban runoff. The term Δt of the equation is relative to period that takes the sample collection or the interval between one collect to another?
You need to calculate the mass of COD (kg) and the amount of water (L) in between sampling times and in this case you should have installed with your sampler a flow meter. In the end you need to sum all mass of COD and divide by the sum of all volumes you got.
It is almost to get a sum of COD in kg/ Volume of stormwater i L and then in the end you have a final value.
I have one paper that i have published where i have done this and it is reported there. Please take a look.

In my case I don't have automatic sampler. I am conducting the experiment manually. But you answered what I needed to know. Also I am going to use your article as reference in my monograph.
Hope you can manage now. The use of an automatic sampler and a flow meter would make your life much easier. But in case you do not have it the volumes of water in between sampling events need to be estimated or perhaps taken from measuring stations from municipalities etc.
