I'm working with 2 polymers: PC (polycarbonate) and ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene).

I have to be able to distinguish these two polymers in a simple way.

My first idea was to check their compatibility with organic solvents. I looked for a such table and found:

> PC = very bad compatibility with cyclohexane / good compatibility with methanol

> ABS = very compatible with cyclohexane and bad with methanol.

So, thanks to these two solvents, I'm supposed to be able to carry out a double test.

However, when I immerge PC in cyclohexane, nothing has happened for the first two hours (yet) ... I thought that, if not compatible, something would rapidly happen to the polymer when immersed in a solvent.

Does anybody have experience with these polymers or with a such test ?
