From Your question I am not sure if You use MATLAB-OpenDSS interface for co-simulation between MATLAB and OpenDSS already.

I used MATLAB-OpenDSS co-simulation for optimization od DG production and use OpenDSS for power flow calculations. I transfer power and power factor of DG-s from MATLAB to OpenDSS and node voltages and losses from OpenDSS to MATLAB.

The code I used for established MATLAB-OpenDSS interface was:

[DSSStartOK, DSSObj, DSSText] = DSSStartup;

DSSCircuit=DSSObj.ActiveCircuit;

DSSSolution=DSSCircuit.Solution;

DSSStartup function (need to be in folder that is in MATLAB path) was:

function [Start,Obj,Text] = DSSStartup

% Function for starting up the DSS

%instantiate the DSS Object

Obj = actxserver('OpenDSSEngine.DSS');

%Start the DSS. Only needs to be executed the first time w/in a

%Matlab session

Start = Obj.Start(0);

% Define the text interface

Text = Obj.Text;

Example of transferring variables from MATLAB to OpenDSS:

Change loads:

DSSText.command=['Edit Load.671 Kw=' num2str(TROS(1,1)*VRSTmjes(sat,1)) ' kvar=' num2str(TROS(1,2)*VRSTmjes(sat,2))];

In above, 'Edit Load.671 Kw=' and ' kvar=' are properties of OpenDSS object (in this case it was active and reactive load in node 671) and TROS(1,1), VRSTmjes(sat,1) are variables from MATLAB workspace.

Change DG production:

DSSText.command=['Edit Generator.DG1 Kw=' num2str(POPpot{1,1}(sat,ijed)) ' kvar=' num2str(POPpot{1,1}(sat+BRseg,ijed))];

For starting OpedDSS simulation from MATLAB I used:

DSSSolution.Solve;

Example of transferring OpenDSS simulation results to MATLAB:

GubiciVodova = DSSCircuit.LineLosses; where GuniciVodova is MATLAB workspace variable and ' DSSCircuit.LineLosses' is properties of OpenDSS object in this case it was total line losses.

Example of reading and transferring OpenDSS simulation results for a property of a OpenDSS object:

DSSText.Command = 'select line.650632 2'; %Selects line L10 terminal 1

DSSText.Command = 'Currents'; %Demands the current of the selected element

STRUJE=str2num(DSSText.Result); %'STRUJE is variable in MATLAB.

There are on web some library or list of OpedDSS functions and object properties that can be send trough COM interface to MATLAB but unfortunately I forgot where I saw this and I can not find it now.

Maybe DIGSilent?! MatLAB and DIGSilent models could somehow also converted from one to another....

The approach is inspired of Model Predictive Control in order to compensate for modeling inaccuracies and measurement noise. The control actions, calculated from a multi-step optimization, are updated and corrected by real-time measurements. The proposed controller uses a linear model to predict the behavior of the system and the optimization is solved using quadratic programming. The proposed corrective control has been tested in a 11-kV distribution network including 75 nodes and hosting 22 distributed generating units.

I have done similar work to interface OpenDSS and Matlab for DG impact on grid. if you are familiar with the discussion forum in OpenDSS, you can raise your doubts. But again from my experience, any algorithms can be implemented through Matlab in conjunction with OpenDSS to solve your network.
