Thank you DV.The reaction between 3,5-dinitro salicyldehyde with picolylamine gives the corresponding imine. This imine is not reduced by NaBH4 ( even 3,5-dinitro salicyldehyde is not reduced by NaBH4). 

Hi ranjan, try one more time to reduce the imine with NaBH4. Here is a publication describing a similiar compound (= N-benzyl-3,5-dinitro-2-hydroxybenzylamine).

Better you first reduce the group which is responsible for electron withdrawing, then carry out subsequent steps.

Have you considered LiBH4, but I would expect that the imine you mention would be not too hard to reduce. Also have you considered adding a Lewis acid to make the imine more reactive towards the borohydride anions

Thank you Mark. If I use LiAlH4, nitro also reduced. Can you give some referance that you told (about addition of lewis acid). 

NaB(CN)H3 is a selective reducing agent for imines and I think it tolerates nitro groups.
