I have 150 separate digital toposheets in dwg format. I need to merge these maps maps using contour layer only at once. Anyone can give me the idea, it will save my time.
You can open each sheet in ArcGIS and activate only the layer that belong to contour. Right click and export to shapefile. It will produce a shapefile that contains only the contour lines. You have to convert (contour lines) for all sheets to shapefile and after that you can merge all the 150 sheet into one single shapefile. I did this before but only for 12 sheets of topo maps. Hope useful.
Open one file in Autodesk Autocad, keep the layer(s) for the contours on and make the other layers off, then insert the rest files using 'INSERT' command. Finally export the mosaicked contours by selecting them. This procedure will take much of time and needs well configured computer. However, you can do edge matching edits if need any.
Within ArcGIS, the Merge tool is found within a set of tools referred to as ArcToolbox.
The Merge tool can be found within Data Management Tools >> General. Double-clicking on the tool opens up its dialog box.
The input datasets are those shapefiles which you wish to merge together. These can be selected using the browse button to the right of the input datasets box. You can select as many shapefiles as you wish as long as they are all of the same data type. You then need to specify a location and name for the output file which will be created.
ArcGIS will automatically read the fields, names and definitions from the input files and suggest a mapping for the fields for the output file, but you may amend these if you wish
