My plan: The incubation experiments with consideration of soil rewetting, different soil water conditions (70% field capacity vs. flooded conditions) and compares the effects of rice cropping vs. non-rice cropping. Investigate the influence of rewetting and different soil water levels of wetland soils on greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) and nutrients in the soil solution (Ammonium, Nitrate, DOC).
Standard methods are there for the estimation of methane and nitrous oxide from rice fields. Follow that.
I haven't published yet, but I've worked on the impact of drought and rewetting on CO2 and CH4 emissions from an agricultural site. Rewetting allowed CO2 emissions to recover to pre-drought levels within two months. CH4 emissions took about 5 months to recover post-rewetting. I used flux chambers to measure emissions, and I sampled ten replicate chambers every month, for over a year, as well as measuring at sites not affected by drought-rewetting cycles, to compare. I analysed samples on a membrane inlet quadrupole mass spectrometer. Unfortunately, although you can measure N20 and CO2 on this machine, they both peak at 44 AMU so I've heard that you can spike N2O samples with 15N as well as the calibration gas, but I didn't measure N2O so I can't advise you further about that. Anneliese Verhaart did that work (she's on here, has published the method and is now at Max Planck I think). Good luck
