The main problem of the solar simulator designs is light intensity insufficiency. I can make fully LED solar simulator design, which covers the AM1.5G solar spectrum and Class C. Thus, solar simulators would be too expensive.
Well the main difficulty, of course, is that we don't know how to make artificial light sources that have blackbody temperature like the sun (5800 K). The various quartz-tungsten halogen lamps out there that I have seen get as high as 3200-3500 K and are pretty expensive.
Certain Arc Lamps can be as high as 6000 K but those do not emit a blackbody spectrum although the white light source of the Xenon Arc Lamp is close to solar spectrum - they just have more Blue/UV compared to green. Below is a specturm
For spectrum, you need spectial artificial lights. For intensity, it is easy for using halogen lights. The question is, do you need concentrated sunlights?
To add to your experimental testing, you could also create a solid model of your solar thermal collector and test it using TracePro software's solar simulator option. TracePro offers the flexibility of designing your solid model and applying material properties on SolidWorks too. Look up Lambda Research's website for more information. They typical offer a full version trial for one month. I recommend you to go through some of their tutorials on YouTube before you request the trial.
