Dear all, My model is a raft rested on number of piles, the piles are soil volumes.
The question now for plaxis 3D users:
How can I improve the mesh quality ? should I local refine the mesh for the volume containing the raft and piles? and what value to put it in Fineness factor? and what will be the global mesh density ?

it is better to do trial analysis with increasing mesh dimensions and mesh density.. based on the analysis use best fit mesh and density for all parametric study. i am sure you will get better accuracy by doing this kind analysis.

Yeah you need to do the convergence analysis. Start from coarse mesh and go further refinement. Based on your results, choose the best meshing.
As per my experience, standard fine meshing is adequate to capture the settlement behaviours.
In selection of mesh size usually mesh convergence study should be carried out. In PLAXIS different types of inbuilt mesh are available such as : Very Coarse, Coarse, Medium, Fine and Very Fine. However you can even introduce very very fine meshing at stress concentration region by increasing coarseness factor (by selecting area of interest). In addition to this, from my experience it is suggested that the at finer meshing results may converges.

I think you need to do convergence analysis by reducing the element size in each analysis up to reach element size that produce stable analysis and then further reduce in element size will not affect the result of the analysis.
Convergence analysis from coarse to very fine mesh will help you to select the appropriate meshing for your study.
