Hi everyone.

when we formulate a finite element for plain-strain/stress, many books employ two-dimensional coordinate.

But, for three-dimensional coordinate, how can we formulate a plain-stress element?

I mean, force can be applied to the element for 3D direction, but the element is under 2D plane condition.

I think some precedure is necessary about transforming coordinate from 3D to 2D from.

For example of three-node element,

[ux1 uy1 uz1 ux2 uy2 uz2 ux3 uy3 uz3] =>  [ux1' uy1' ux2' uy2' ux3' uy3']

So...How can I generally transform the strains in 3D to plane strain in 2D ?
