Running CASTEP calculations on some structures in materials studio 7 this message appeared and persists:
Failed to create job for the server: CASTEP. This computer was unable to communicate with the computer providing the server.
Can someone explain this and resolve it?

Materials Studio starts Castep calculations by communicating with a special server, often called a "gateway". In order to run Castep locally, you need to start the gateway on your local machine, and then tell Materials Studio to use this.
I can't quite remember exactly how you do this, but I think there are scripts somewhere in the Materials Studio installation to start the Gateway (I think they're called something like gwstart or perhaps gwstartservice, and there are others to configure it, restart it, stop it etc.) To get Materials Studio to use it I think you need to open the License Administrator and configure everything in there.
Sorry this is a bit vague, I use Linux most of the time so am not too familiar with Materials Studio. You'd probably get better advice from Accelrys' customer forum:

This occur when you are using a floating license and there is no connection with the server. You can solve this problem by running the Material Studio locally with temporary license. Or by connecting to remote computers on a corporate network from any computer with an Internet connection i.e. Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway).

I had this problem... you have to reinstall the server gateway package and restart your PC, then, in tools, open the server console, erase the gateways earlier aggregated and attach it again. in my case this resolved the problem. good luck!!
Short answer is remove Accelrys Materials Studio Gateway Service (if it is installed) and then install Accelrys Materials Studio Gateway Service (i686) or Accelrys Materials Studio Gateway Service (x64). The one does not give privilege error.

Long answer: I am very new to Material Studio. I have read the answers given before and they did not make sense to me first. Now, I fixed the problem, and they make sense and they are right.
I just want to write to simplify the solution. If it does not make sense, I am willing to update.
I got that problem when I have installed version 8.0 without removing 7.0. That might be another reason, but I don't remember anything else unusual. The Gateways are version specific if you try to install before Material Studio it pops up an error.
Problem is that Material Studio complicated licensing style. Although, it make sense for HPC. I did not see any benefit for individual users.
There are three components for licensing: Material Studio (MS), License Administrator (LA), and Server Console (SC).
First two are well documented: MS requires license, LA provides license. However, SC is not taken very seriously. It creates an Apache server and shares the provided license publicly. This part does not make sense to me because they are on same machine; why don't they share directly?
First you can check whether Apache server is working. You can check windows services as following:
You should be fine now. Test your material studio.
If it is not there you have an issue with Gateways service,
Check the server console. You should see My computer (See attached image).
If you still don't see any problem, individually you can remove Accelrys Materials Studio Gateway Service. There is link at the beginning, but if you are still reading, probably it did not help out. I use Revo Uninstaller Pro.

I want to mention. I did not need to restart which may be different for you.
