I am looking for a parameter to have a rough estimation of COD. I have a continuous setup and I need to measure COD online. I know I can measure COD using Potassium Dichromate which explained in Apha Awa standard methods (5220) but I want another fast response way to determine it online. The COD in my setup is 8000-40000 mg/L.

For determination of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), the dichromate method (which a wet chemical oxidation method) requires about 2 hours for oxidation and it uses hazardous chemicals such as chromic acid, mercury suphate, sulphuric acid and titration reagents. Thus it is not suitable for online analysis. Also due to the heavy usage of toxic chemicals this method is not acceptable for laboratory personal.
The most popular current testing method for COD involves using sealed and heated (i.e., closed reflux) low-range (3-150 ppm) or high-range (20-1500 ppm) pre-prepared vials that change color from orange to green based on the amount of oxidation and that are read using a laboratory colorimeter.
