I want to conduct a study with mixed method. My study is on developing an attitude questionnaire (Attitude towards Physical Education). My main focus is on quantitative results but qualitative might be necessary to form items. With the lack of time to focus on both i want to conduct a qualitative study with shortest possible time. Please suggest me how to do this.
Focus groups are the classic method for generating survey content, but the technique you use depends on the kind of things you are trying to generate. Can you tell us more about the substantive content you want to measure?
Take a look at Qualitative Descriptive Design. Also, you don't mention how much is already known about your topic. This is a great approach for a topic/phenomena that is not well understood/little known about. See Sandelowski , Maguire & Thomas, 2003; Jiggins-Colorafi & Evans 2016 . Thank you for sharing David L Morgan Yes, i like to know the factors which are influencing Attitude towards Physical Education. The items will come under different factors. For example, I like to participate in games during PE classes because of my teacher (Factor - Teacher). There may be lot of other factors which may influence the attitude towards PE. I want to know from the students which are the decisive factors which influences their attitude towards PE, those factors will be elicited from the students through qualitative method. Those items (under different factors) will be used for quantitative study after validation of the questionnaire.
Kaaren Nelson You have given me a good idea of the usage of Qualitative method. To my knowledge, the topic is known or enough literature is there. I just thought if this could be necessary for a robust research.
Most research on what is known as brainstorming shows that individuals are just as good as groups at generating lists of ideas. So, you might start by having six or so individuals write lists of as many things as they can think of that influence Attitude towards Physical Education.
From that data you could decide on your factors, and determine which of those factors already had enough ideas and which ones you needed to ask about in a second round.

1. To assess students’ attitudes toward Physical Education (PE) with appropriate instrumentation based on attitude theory and psychometric theory.
2. With this assessment teachers can modify the Physical Education curriculum in order to improve the students' attitude towards PE (results will show whether there is positive or negative attitude, for example, if it is negative in a particular factor, it suggest that there should be some intervention in that particular factor)
You need to use a well validated scale for that or design your own. then you have to run psychometric validation analysis for reliability, internal and external validity to confirm if it is measuring the same construct. Then you have to develop hypothesis and do the correlation of the data from respondents to see if correlations are strong.
