difficult question, we experimenting with urin collection under Glucose-Clamp condition over 2h to determine glucose in urin, for that we use tissue pads, that we place in a restrainer.

Perhaps you can place a tissue under some kind of grid in the cage, that the mice can not eat it. In that way also the feces will be separeated. You can weigh the tissue before and after the experiment to determine the urin volume, at the end you can resolve the urin pad, perhaps in water and try to measure your metabolites. Mention that over the time period the water will evaporate. To work against this you can change the tissue very often but this will stress the mice and you over 24 hours :). You can also, prepare are cage like this (or best will be 3 or 5 cages) without animals, moisten the tissue with water and weigh it in several time intervalls to see who much water will evaporate over the time period, and put this into the calcuation. Mention also that this will word good for sugars or salts in the urin, for metabolites it's possible that they have the affinitiy to stuck to the cellulose in the tissue.
