I have simulated the continuous casting process using FLUENT software. I want to find the exact metallurgical length of the solidified strand. Is there any method in Fluent where I can find it directly or can someone provide the formula to calculate manually from Fluent output data?

the solidification constant K has widely varying values for different types of caster. Normally for a slab caster it is considered to be around 25-30. However, if you have done a solidification model in Ansys Fluent, you can find the exact metallurgical length.
All you need to do is plot the solid fraction or liquid fraction profile for the centre of the section along the caster length. The point where solid fraction becomes 1 is the metallurgical length.

Unfortunately we did not use the fluent, we use a propore computation code in Fortran language. if you have a full mathematical medele phonemene we can hepl you and we take the numerical simulations.

Mr. Said, If you can provide a mathematical formula to calculate the metallurgical length then I could find it from the Fluent outputs.
In one of the literature I have found a formula as
L = V*(D/K)^2
where,
L is the metallurgical length
V is the casting speed
D is the shell thickness
K is an empirical constant characterizing the secondary cooling zone.
But I am not able to find the K value anywhere. Can you throw some light here?

I have plotted the liquid fraction for the center of the section along the caster length but Fluent plots the vertical length v/s liquid fraction and not length along the curve.
Presently I take this vertical length and then calculate the metallurgical length analytically. I suppose there is a direct method in Fluent.
Another question is that should we consider the Metallurgical Length only when the Liquid Fraction is 0.000?
You can do it directly in Fluent by creating isosurface. Otherwise during meshing you can create a central plane beforehand.
Different researchers have have differing view on the solid fraction to be taken to assume complete solidification. That varies from 0.70 to 1.0 depending on the grades of steel. Normally we consider that the materieal is solidified when its solid fraction touches 0.75
I have considered an isosurface in Fluent but when I plot, it is plotting for vertical distance and not the distance along the curve.
Are you considering a rectangular cross-section for the strand geometry?

In Fluent, you can't draw the isosurface on a curved surface.
While, if you want to find the place where it gets completely solidified then just zoom that position on solidification contour on Fluent and right click where it seems completely solidified. You will get the contour value and coordinate of that point. Now I suppose, you can calculate the metallurgical length.

I am doing the same. I take the coordinate of the last point in mushy region and calculate metallurgical length manually. I am doing the same for shell thickness as well.
But can you tell me how do I plot shell thickness vs length from meniscus?
