I am new to Abaqus. I am working on a simulation that includes 120 parts assembled. I started to do this manually. The parts are identical so I should create 120 instances of 1 part, after assembling 20 of them, I faced into a lot of problems that I think it should be done using scripting rather than manually. Can you please advise what is a suitable approach? Thank you.
It is exactly as Martin described. But I just want to add that since you are new to ABAQUS, you can use the GUI to do this:
Open the file in ABAQUS. Then go to "Macro Manager" and record a new macro. create tow instances of the part and apply required constraints or place them accordingly in space. Use meaningful names for the instances so that you can recognize them later in the macro file. Then his stop record button. In your home folder you should see a file abaqusmacros.py
Open the file in text editor and find the section where you assembled the part. before section starts, create a loop using "for" construct in python with proper indentation. you'll need to indicate names for the new instances that chronologically increase. You can use "str" command to add an index to the name so that ABAQUS does not complain. try it for 3 instances and once you were sure, change the "for" command to go up to 120.
Then save the file and go back to Macro Manager and hit reload. Then just play the macro and should work now.

You should probably do this in python (alternatively, you could create an inp file and edit that). If you do not know the appropriate python command (the scripting manual is not too godd, I think), the trick is to do it once using the GUI.
Before you start, enter the following two commands in the script input line in the GUI:
>>> from abaqusConstants import *
>>> session.journalOptions.setValues(replayGeometry=INDEX)
Then click whatever you need to click to instantiate the parts.
Afterwards, look into the journal file (abaqus.rpy), where everything is recorded as python commands. Use this as basis to write a pythin script.

Hello all,
i just wanted to add to the above answers that if your parts have all the same mechanical properties and they are all tied together then you could import combined assembly as one abaqus part.
If you design your parts in catia then during import you can select .CATProduct and after that tick "Combine into single part". I have also ticked "Merge solid regions" because my assembly parts were tied together.
