I'm working on a longish term ethnographic project and have already (3 years ago) published one article in a refereed journal. My current dilemma relates to the next stage of publishing. I am writing a paper at the moment and am seeking advice on how to maintain blind review, especially as the initial target journal is the same one that I published 'part one' in. In this field, journals are becoming, understandably, concerned with ensuring 'blindness' in review.

Simply referring to an unnamed publication in the normal way (eg 'self citation to be added after peer review' or similar) would probably be problematic in this sort of submission if any other detail is given and I'm sure that the paper would be more valuable if the ongoing nature of the study is discussed. I have one or two ideas about how to go about paper 2, but thought it would be a good idea to seek other advice before progressing further.

The purpose of the research is similar for both papers and, though the theoretical focus is a little different, I do need to draw on data from both stages of the overall project. There is a historical/change angle In paper 2, so it is important to be able to compare data from the two phases as well.
