Human-Automation Interaction is a field involving aerospace and military which often include supervisory tasks. However in another context e.g. production systems it is important to be able to characterize and measure the quality of other tasks. What types of quantitative or qualitative measures can be used?

I think that you ask a very good question that can be expanded remembering that 'automation' is done basing on machines that work according to well-defined rules by algorithms. If we go back to the history of computers and Turing machines as their models, we can see that during many years any discussion about interaction in processing was excluded. This is related to the fact that the model of Turing machines don't assume that these machines can interact with environment during processing. But on the other hand if we follow for example the definitions of algorithms (especially given by D. Knuth) we can see that interaction was taken into account in successive versions of his definitions of term 'algorithm', but it is not sure that this can be done in the way that was done by D. Knuth. I have some ideas that should help describe this problems in terms of numbers and experiments. Some of them are related to simple problems well-known in computer science like for example sorting. I've just realize that there are some sorting algorithms that can work in interactive mode and some that cannot or, to be more precise, if they work, they will have different complexity (for example not O(nlg(n))). This is especially well-visible for algorithms that work with divide-and-conquer rule.
