In order to analyse slope stability on solid waste landfills, geotechnical parameters of waste must be estimated. Which lab analysis could be used? If no lab analysis are available, which values for cohesion and internal friction angle could be used depending on the type of solid waste?
I have performed edometric test in large scale (apparatus for sand and gravel material) to define the Compressibility modulus on material with significant moisture and cut in pieces. The investigation was quite successful resulting in stability and deformation FE analysis of solid wast landfill.
There are several ways to determine the geotechnical properties of MSW materials. As the particles of MSW are big, only the large scale apparatus should be employed.
To evaluate deformation characteristics of MSW, large scale oedometer might be used but to evaluate the shear strength of MSW choosing the proper apparatus should be based on the shearing mechanisms applied to samples.
It is mainly because of strength anisotropic nature of MSW due to existence of fibrous materials inside the MSW.
Large scale triaxial device, direct shear and tension apparatus have been employed in different researches which the latter has been invented by Kolsch (1995).

It will also be interesting to perform full scale direct shear tests at the MSW site to determine the robust parameters for any analysis.
