Bamboo is used extensively as a building material in Southeast Asia ( particularly, Indonesia). How can it be combined with others (eg. stone, glass, concrete, etc)? I am seeking the relationship between bamboo and other materials following the Asian theory of 5 natural elements - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth.
Bamboo can be worked into sheets or tiles for flooring, and is an increasingly common alternative to plywood and laminate. Tube-like lengths of bamboo are commonly used as scaffolding in construction and repair of buildings in Asia. A problem with using tube-like lengths of bamboo within the framework of a building is that the hollowness within the tubes makes them very flammable and thus dangerously combustible.
Nice to hear from you, Zen Ly. A couple of possible ways to reduce bamboo tubing's flammability in building construction would be to cut it into two lengthwise and/or embed it in nonflammable material such as stucco, brickwork, or cement. The effect could possibly resemble an Asian version of Tudor half-timbered houses. Someone has probably already done this somewhere, but I've not yet seen it personally.
I'm glad to hear your information, Philip Williams. It's useful for me. Also, there are some treatments can reduce bamboo's flammability, such as: salt treatment, borax, etc. But I must seek the exact information about that. If you have more information, welcome to share with me.
