A friend who teaches at a university recently asked me a question. There has been constant controversy about artificial intelligence, and we all see the value of intelligent assistive technology. my problem right now is specifically with gen ai such as Chatgpt. Students are already using it as a crutch. Worse yet administrators are jumping on board thinking it will save money and reduce work yet they do not know how it actually works... This makes me think deeply...
It's understandable to have mixed feelings about the rapid adoption of generative AI like ChatGPT in educational settings.
Absolutely, the integration of generative AI in education brings both exciting opportunities and valid concerns. On one hand, tools like ChatGPT can provide personalized learning experiences, assist with tutoring, and offer instant feedback, which can be incredibly beneficial for students. They can also help educators by automating administrative tasks and providing new ways to engage students.
On the other hand, there are concerns about over-reliance on AI, potential biases in AI-generated content, and the need for students to develop critical thinking skills without always turning to AI for answers. Additionally, issues around data privacy and the ethical use of AI in education are important to consider.
The PBL Exercises given to my students where they have to go through the autopsy findings and have to find out the cause and manner of death, is being contaminated using AI. Some of the students feed the content to the AI, which in turn finds the answers for them. As already pointed out by the earlier person, the critical thinking is lost.
Moreover I feel the creativity also is now taken up by the AI. I had asked a few of the young generation as to how much they are dependent on AI - even they seek suggestions from the AI as to which pair of shoes would go appropriately with a particular dress - the person never gives an opportunity for his or her actual intelligence or creativity to sort a very simple task as this - let alone critical thinking scenarios.
