Biologically diverse communities are also more likely to contain species that confer resilience to that ecosystem because as a community accumulates species, there is a higher chance of any one of them having traits that enable them to adapt to a changing environment. Resilience and biodiversity relate to the stability of an ecosystem because the diverse species will have a high chance of having traits that help them show resiliency in the ecosystem for their survival. Biodiversity is of critical importance to the stability of natural ecosystems and their abilities to provide positive benefits such as oxygen production, soil genesis, and water detoxification to plant and animal communities, as well as to human society. Resistance or resilience to disturbances helps ecosystems remain in or return to their pre-disturbance state. It's possible, though, that a significant disturbance could move the system so far from its original equilibrium that it flips to a new, completely different set of conditions a new ecological state.Ecosystems that are more complex are more resilient, or better able to tolerate and recover from disturbances, than ecosystems that are less complex. To help illustrate why this is, imagine a complex ecosystem with many components and many interactions between those components. This is often termed the resistance of a system. Resilience is a somewhat different aspect of stability indicating the ability of an ecosystem to return to its original state following a disturbance or other perturbation. Ecosystem stability is an ecosystem's ability to recover from a disaster. Imagine that a disaster wipes out a species. If the ecosystem has high biodiversity, a new species will quickly move into the niche occupied by the old species, and the ecosystem as a whole will recover quickly. Both resistance and resilience cause an ecosystem to remain relatively unchanged when confronted to a disturbance, but in the case of resistance alone no internal re-organization and succession change is involved. This can lead to collapse of the system when a disturbance threshold is exceeded. Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support all life on Earth, including humans. Without a wide range of animals, plants and microorganisms, we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat. And people also value nature of it. Stability is the ability of a system to return to the same equilibrium state after a temporary disturbance. “Resilience, on the other hand, is the ability of systems to absorb change and disturbance and still maintain the same relationships between populations or state variables.”
