Doing a thesis on tape casting/slurry making for solid oxide fuel cell layers, just trying to get information on how materials are traditionally fed to the inlet of ball mills (used to make the slurry for the tapes). If multiple materials need to be added, how is that done, is it by hand or an automated process?
You should homogenize all the constituents before adding. e.g. disperse the solids in a liquid and then feed this liquid into the mill. Options are subsequent addition of other (predispersed) constituents to the dispersion if these constituents cannot withstand a prolonged milling cycle, or pre-mill the homogenized mixture to remove hard agglomerates before adding.
a good option is to use a dispersant. disperse the dispersant in the solvent medium with the help of ultrasonicator may be for a 5 mins. then add the solid powder and ultrasonicate for 10 more minutes and put in the ball mill for say 4 hrs. and if need add the other organics like binder etc and allow to mix for 24 hrs. the time durations are flexible or may vary for different systems and amount of powder.
