The research paper "In Characteristics of a Dwarf Octoploid Mutation Arising from a Nonaploid Persimmon Cultivar" documents an occurrence of the lose of chromosomes during mitosis. How does sure a lose of chromosomes during mitosis occur?

In looking at documented sports of triploid Rhododendron we have found using flow cytometry that such sports can be diploid or tetraploid. We are trying to determine if such documented sports really are sports and if so what irregularities can cause mitosis to result in a lose or gain of chromosomes when doubling of the number is not the outcome.
