Parents who want to homeschool their children but still have some reservations about it should take time to consider the positive and negative aspects of homeschooling.
Vadim S. Gorshkov You are right, it will be like that. But at least we control the contents of the subjects. Sometimes the school curriculum is old and does not reflect the modern life and science. Homeschooling allow us to choose the best books from different resources. Thank you again.
Do you have a plan the homeschooling for your children? If you children is young, it would not be the best choice. However, if your children is mature enough to consider thier own interest and career path, it would be a better choice. I did not homeschool for my kids, and I chose the homeschooling (independent study) for my program of research a few years ago. Perhpas, if your children would like to be creative, the homeshcooling may be a better decision.
Claire Su-Yeon Park For families who are living abroad for short time (few years), it is not easy for their kids to adapt with the education's system of that foreign country especially in some countries in Asia (like China). We started homeschooling system this year, however we are still afraid about the failure of this step.
" Homeschooling--that is, parent-led home-based education--is an age-old traditional educational practice that a decade ago appeared to be cutting-edge and "alternative" but is now bordering on "mainstream" in the United States. It may be the fastest-growing form of education in the United States. This article describes the following findings regarding home education: (1) General facts and trends regarding homeschooling; (2) Reasons for home educating; (3) Academic performance comparisons between institutionally-schooled and home-educated students; (4) Social, emotional, and psychological development; (5) Gender differences in children who are home educated; and (6) Success in the "Real World" of adulthood. Research designs to date do not conclusively "prove" that homeschooling causes these statistical findings. At the same time, there is no empirical evidence that homeschooling causes negative results compared to institutional schooling. Future research may better answer the question of causation( Ray, B. D. (2015). Research Facts on Homeschooling. National home education research institute)".
" A notable increase in the number of U.S. families choosing to homeschool their children in recent years has underscored the need to develop more systematic knowledge about this approach to education. Drawing on a theoretical model of parental involvement as well as research on families’ social networks, this study longitudinally examines home- and public-school parents’ motivations for home-based involvement in their fourth through eighth grade children’s education at two time points. The study also examines whether involvement activities predicted student proximal achievement outcomes (academic self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation for learning, and self-regulatory strategy use) across the two groups. Results suggest that parental self-efficacy for involvement, specific invitations from the child, and parent social networks are positively related to home-based parental involvement across the groups, although home- and public-school parents recorded significantly different perceptions of personal self-efficacy, role activity beliefs, social networks, and child proximal achievement outcomes. Findings are discussed with reference to implications for future research and practice"( Ice, C. L., & Hoover-Dempsey, K. V. (2011). Linking parental motivations for involvement and student proximal achievement outcomes in homeschooling and public schooling settings. Education and Urban Society, 43(3), 339-369).
It is possible that home education can give a child a better education (but it also depends on the level of education of the parents - for example, Roma children in Russia practically do not attend school, despite the efforts of the authorities. The result is simply the reproduction of an isolated diaspora with a extremely low level of education. At the same time, from the point of view of this community, all necessary knowledge they receiving ...). But even if parents provide a really high level of education for children (and this, as a rule, requires relatively large financial expenditures), the important function of the school - socialization - is not fulfilled. Of course, there are schools where socialization is not desirable ... But, as many say, it doesn’t matter where you studied, it’s important with whom you used same piss-pot. A significant part of life is connected with friends whom you acquire in kindergarten, at school and university. In addition, the school education also has an elements of competition, which affects the student's motivation.
If we talk about myself, I finished school in a very marginal area of the city (therefore I was the best in class). But when I came to university, I realized how much my level of education is below average. Nevertheless, it was sufficient to raise it myself.
Further, I had colleagues, "subjected" to home education. Possessing quite good knowledge, they were lost itself in the simplest life situations. As far as I know, none of them has become an outstanding scientist. At the same time, I know that several Russian famous scientists were born and studied in schools in places that are not very different from "favelas"... For example, one person, about whom many have heard, born, lived, and studied in school at Nizhny Tagil (I will not tell about this marvelous city).
Vadim S. Gorshkov Thank you for your valuable comment. I agree with all your points. I am afraid that my kids lose the spirit of competition that we can find in the regular education at schools. It may depend on the parents' strategy used in the homeschooling program. If it is very conservative or it is opened. It is good to share the strategy with other families living around so that they can study mathematics in one home together and another subject in another family's home based on the parents' education specialization. In this case the competition among the kids will be available and the personalities of the kids will be better and better than stay at home and study without communications and discussions with others.
The essence of home schooling is the need for children to learn quickly and in a manner commensurate with the world they live in, "digital world" ie "digital personal education"
Djaafar Zemali Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. All families seek for better education levels for their kids. Another benefit is that the families can control the content of the subjects.
Samir M. Ismail Thank you for sharing your opinion. In homeschooling program, families can enjoy spending more time with their children, do you think the kids' personalities will be affected positively or negatively?
It's all good, but do not you think that if you follow this path to the end - this is the creation of ... a school? May be elite school, but still school?
Home schooling from my perspective would restrict the child from the realities of the outside world. While improved academic performance would be desirable, the socio-cultural aspect of life also must be taken into consideration. How to associate with other individuals given the differences in upbringing and environments. For some who consider it as a way for parents to spend more time with their kids, the conventional schooling system does not prevent that. It allows for a mix in the learning process for the kid which is a very good thing.
Vadim S. Gorshkov You are right, it will be like that. But at least we control the contents of the subjects. Sometimes the school curriculum is old and does not reflect the modern life and science. Homeschooling allow us to choose the best books from different resources. Thank you again.
Ahamuefula Ephraim Ogbonna Thank you for sharing your opinion. I agree with your point that the kids will miss too much experience how to face the real life. However, it depends on the parents' strategy. When we give confidence tour kids and a space to be free and express themselves, they could adapt well with the outside world. Some outside activities like music and sports will support this point. Thank you very much.
Of course, school should "reflect the modern life and science". But on base of traditional knowlege.
Recently I read an interview with a professor at a famous university in Moscow. In particular, he said that factually an experiment make in Russia to provide higher education to people who do not even have an middle one (this is about the situation in the Russian school). In fact, people just need to learn how to write and count, and only then give them more complicated things. We have people can talk about the universe, not knowing how much will be two by two. The advantage of a normal school curriculum is that knowledge is given consistently (at least should) in many subjects. Learning should be broad. Unfortunately, at home and elite education, people may know physics perfectly (for example, or computer science), but have no idea about biology (or literature etc.) ... This leads to narrowness, which also hinders in the main specialty.
I think homeschooled students should perform better in general, because of the individual approach, more intensive curriculum and personalized study path.
Some children may not want to continue homeschool as they grow up, and you’ll have to decide whether to let them try another schooling method.
They aren’t going to see diverse people and encounter tricky situations as often, so you’ll need to introduce them to things such as race, sexual orientation, sex (in general, but also sex ed), and more in your own way, which can be a plus or a minus.
Your child's needs might be outside of your comfort zone. They may have intellectual issues that cause them trouble, or they may excel beyond your knowledge in a subject (particularly in high-school), and some people don’t feel qualified to handle these situations.
Trust in your child. Children love to learn. They have an inborn natural hunger to explore the world and examine what is interesting. They learn best by following their interests, with one interest leading to another. Schools don't teach children how to walk, talk, run, smile, love, dress themselves or understand their world. They learn these things at home with loving parents who have their best interest at heart.
David Wooff Thank you for sharing this valuable article. I thought that unschoolers mean that the parents do not send their kids to school and instead they teach them at home. After reading this article I found that there is another type of homeschooling which give the kids a freedom to pursue their own interests and learn, in their way, what they need to follow those interests.
This article leads to another hot discussion on the strategy that the parents should follow if they decided the homeschooling path.
Sadanand Pandey Thank you for your valuable comments. Really I enjoy the advantages as you said. But I am still afraid of the disadvantages. How long time can we stay in such program? How to evaluate the progress of our kids? These questions take a big space in my thinking.
