Could anyone recommend research that explores how/if student success in higher education could be correlated to teachers' training (i.e. professional development for academic staff)?
the ‚functional chain’ from the content of teacher education, over teachers’ professional knowledge, instructional quality and to students’ achievement has been a topic of research in several fields. It is a challenging kind of research because of many reasons but there is evidence, especially in mathematics (check out the COACTIV project) and science education research.
You could start by checking out the following project:
Dear Therese, Thank you for your question. I think the difficulty is in designing such research, correlating teachers' training to students' success. As we know learning is affected by several factors including the environment in which learning happens, methods used in teaching and learning, material used in teaching and learning, quality of interaction in the classroom, students' learning style, other factors affecting students' learning such as family support, family problems, psychological problems, social problems, resource availability, opportunities, student's focus, priorities, and many others. While teacher's interactio, interpersonal skills, competency in facilitation, and in her/his subject are important, other factors stated above are contributing to learner's success, it is difficult to eleminate them. The environment of learning plays a significant role and we cannot ignore its role. There are several studies that showed that the environment and the level of interaction created by teachers and students in the classroom have an impact on learning.
