To advance or retard the flowering in field crops you can advance or retard the crop growth and development by management practices. For instance in temperate field crops the use of soil covering such as plastic mulch can accelerate the warming of the soil advancing the ability to plant earlier and get earlier crop development and flowering. The early development and flowering of field crops can be fostered by optimizing Phosphorus nutrition and other nutritional needs of the crop plant. In addition the use of growth regulator compounds can be used to advance or retard the flowering of field crops. For retarding flowering the early crop can be pruned to delay flowering and withdrawing water can be used to delay crop developmental stages under irrigated conditions. In developing hybrid seed crops the use of a variety of planting dates can be used to ensure hybrid combinations and breeding operations are achieved.
