There appears to be a lack of consistency in the RS literature with regards to how different spatial resolution ranges are described. Below we share the nomenclature that we typically use and think works, but are curious to get feedback.
< 1 m - VHSR - Very High Spatial Resolution (SR) (e.g. QuickBird)
1-10 m - High SR (IKONOS)
10-100 m - Medium SR (Landsat, ASTER, MSS, AWIFS)
100-1000 m - Low SR (MODIS, MERIS)
> 1000 m - Very Low SR (AVHRR, GOES, METEOSAT)
The greatest confusion appears to be around medium and moderate. The 10-100 m range often gets called moderate, but this is confusing with MODIS, IMHO. This nomenclature also uses parallel descriptors (that is, not mixing in terms such as fine and coarse, which used to be more popular).
Any thoughts? Thanks!
