Is ecosystem classification (IUCN, http://bit.ly/XpefyH) destined to be inaccurate because mapping vegetation units at the finest level (alliances and associations) is too difficult (Sayre et al 2009--New US Ecosystem Map)? Will an ecosystem classification be 'accurate enough' for use to protect critical units, or will surprises be the norm? Just how useful are association maps? Are they worth the effort?
