Skin samples from S0 smolt (110 grams) (Atlantic salmon), production fish, reared in freshwater. The scales of the fish forms circular patterns with epidermal growth inside. Half of the sampled fish (5/10) had this phenotype. Have anyone seen this before?

I do not know which part of the skin you sampled but this could simply be the lateral line.
Can you perform some specific stains, for instance for alkaline phosphatase to identify osteoblasts, and tartrate acid-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAcP) or cathepsin K for osteoclasts? Might give you a clue as to where the cells lining the pocket are derived from.
