Some literature say among three macrolagae (red, green and brown algae), xylan can only be found in green and red algae (Palmaria palmata). I want to know if anyone has measured xylan from other red algae (Gracillaria)? Thank you
I never analyzed algaes, but I worked on the modification of xylans. If you cannot find a hind in literature you can make a total hydrolysis and measure the presence of Xylose, as a basic sugar of Xylan. You can use a thermal carbohydrat degradation on 2molar Trifluoroaceticacid, Vacuum-drying and resolubilization in water and following a regular sugar analysis.Xylans are mostly absolutely insoluble and chemically bonded to the lignin of the plants, so mosly there is no other sure way than degrading.
