All sampling of wild fish (and animals in general) entails handling (tagging, blood sampling, length sampling...) or killing. Even non-invasive methods like acoustic sampling, requires some fish catches to validate ecograms. Even more, if we go to the extreme, to film wild fish entails animal disturbance and in some cases, habitat alteration. This is a question I have asked myself on several occasions, especially in the case of scientific surveys for assessment or prospecting marine ecosystems. What is the best method to minimize the impact of scientific sampling on wild fish? Is the study of wild animals possible without altering them? Does anything go in the name of science?
