i am looking for traffic volume info directly from web for any road. The only info available is relative congestion index, travel time, travel distances.
if someone has been successful in extracting this info, pl let me know, even if it is a paid service, it is okay.
i am more interested in India specific.
Because all these services are simply sampling data from cell phones, it's very hard to extract volume. The best you could do is determine the speed-flow equation from a conventional sensor, then use web-based speeds to estimate flow. This will only work in fairly congested situations and where you have a stable speed-flow relationship.
If you experiment as suggested.
Avoid sections where a high number of hire vehicles are waiting to pickup passengers or chauffeur driven vehicles are parked as their (driver’s) mobiles are detected and section is reported as congested by the map providers. I observed this many times when traffic is moving smooth but section is shown congested. Next time I will save a screen shot of the Google map and take a snap or a video of the section at the same time.
Parked vehicles, at the local market, are the reason for the red stretch seen in the G-Map screen shot(14:19).
