Who deserve authorship in a paper is really a rarely discussed issue in the academia, in my view. However, we are well aware of that fact that guest, ghost, and gift authors are commonplace, perhaps from the time immemorial. Junior researchers, in particular, are the victim of such malpractice. Many senior researchers proudly mention their high number of peer-reviewed articles and citation count. In many cases, however, they are authors of most their papers without any contributions, whatsoever. This malpractice is wide spread yet I see that academia remains mum. They are authors for reasons, such as a head of a research group and fund-achiever. Many junior researchers are (shamefully) happy as long as their jobs are secured. I feel sorry for them. I think it is an obnoxious practice and needs punitive measures.

Please share your thoughts if you have any first-hand experience. I am currently working on a paper that deals with academic prostitution (I say it like many others).
