I would like to start working with gels for possible technological applications. I know that it is easily possible to form a gel with gelatin, but I do not know if this gel can have interesting technological applications.
In principle, gelatin have been used for many application ; food application, medical application etc. However, intestingly, how we make the simple materials to be attractive and smart materials. For my opinion, we should create such materials to be multifunctional materials for medical application. In this case, nanotechnology should be used to create such materials.
Besides application in the food and photography industry it can be applied as scaffold material in tissue engineering applications, when properly modified.
Surface modification with Gelatin renders the particles hydrophillic surface which is much biocompatible with biological fluids than hydrophobic surfaces....Besides that since it is a protein, its presence on the surface of particles gives you many modification opportunities e.g. linking targeting ligands etc...I hope one of my article will of help in this regard...have a look http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/mabi.201200382/abstract
Crosslinked gelatin has been used in blood contacting surfaces for applications as the artificial heart, left ventricular assist devices and vascular grafts. The smooth surface is high blood compatible and can be applied in various configutations.
