During the hydraulic fracturing, fracture propagates and coalesces, in which process, bond breaking happens, this process is exothermic reaction or endothermic reaction? I know that a small amount of energy is required to create two new free surfaces (twice the surface energy per unit area of crack advance, to be precise), however, during the crack/fracture tip propagate, is the release energy larger than the applied energy on the original fracture? To be more exact, if I exert 10 joule on the original fracture, after that, fracture propagate, will the released energy equal to or larger than 10 joule?
