I believe that enabling consciousness in AI involves granting it the capacity to parse the universe and label this parsing based on its learning trajectory. Our attempts to replicate the way we perceive the world often involve compelling AI to mimic our parsing methods. However, I posit that the most effective approach is to allow this ability to emerge organically, without imposing external constraints. As a human, my own understanding of the world is limited to my unique parsing perspective, making me inclined to think that my way of parsing is inherently the optimal method.
Interesting perspective, much like humans shape their understanding of the world based on their experiences, knowledge, and beliefs, AI systems derive their insights from the data they are exposed to and the interactions they have, often with humans. Therefore, I am not sure I would agree with the "without imposing constraints" part.
Ethical considerations are crucial in AI development to ensure responsible and fair use of the technology. Without clear guidelines, there's a risk that AI systems could inadvertently perpetuate biases present in the data they were trained on or behave in ways that may be considered ethically problematic.
Establishing ethical principles and guidelines for AI is an ongoing effort in the field, involving issues like privacy, fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems.

I agree with Tarik, the development of algorithms could allow the growth of an organic nature. However, as human beings are fallible so will the organically evolving algorithms pose a great threat to society unhindered. For an algorithm developed and trained on error-prone data and has assimilated same in the process becomes dangerous like the computer virus poses a challenge to files and vital materials on the system.
With ethics and legal constraints, algorithms have to be constrained in those facets to make them transparent and accountable to the society in which these evolving algorithms will be operating. There may be error-programmed AI that could cause murder or manslaughter or cause public nuisance. These and many other likely threats may overshadow the opportunity side of using these machines for productivity enhancement and the like.
So from my point, of view and as an ethicist in algorithms, we better put breaks and constraints not to make the world an unsafe place due to error-programmed algorithms evolving into Frankenstein monsters for society. Constraints both ethically and legally are a must, to ensure transparency and accountability of these machines and their developers to the larger society.
