From practical experience, we often observe that the waiting times for using the toilets (or bathrooms) is much longer for women than for men. Often we see long lines outside the women's toilets. In terms of gender equality and public policy, should we equalize the waiting time rather than the number of facilities?
Why should be a man penalized for having a penis and hence having the ability to use urinal for urinating?
The waiting time can be equalized (a) by the owner of the women and men bathrooms building more toilet bowls for women, and/or (b) by the users of the women bathroom willing to share a toilet bowl.
In neither case is it a matter of public policy: it is a matter of the owner of the bathrooms (a) or the users (b).
Public toilets? Public restaurants? I would probably exclude private country clubs.
Women scholars on RG, it is in YOUR interest to unite, and demand equality!!!!
What better place to start, than with a simple practical situation, with LOTS of robust, verifiable empirical, scientific (?) evidence in support for the equality proposition?

Martin Böhnert I think unisex toilets may not work for collective bathrooms. It could work for individual, private bathrooms, I am guessing. Maybe it is an issue of cost. It would be very expensive to build only individual bathrooms.
Joseph Tham , a bathroom with a door that can be locked is a private bathroom: airplane/train lavatory. Is it an issue of cost or an issue of architects not thinking about buildings as moving objects of limited size?
Martin Klvana I hope that architects on RG will help us by commenting on your suggestion. I am guessing that at a huge public railway station, it would be more expensive to build individual toilets. It is an empirical question that only information and data can help in answering. A private railway station could include the cost in the tickets.
