For FTIR instrument how do I relate the noise reduction factor to number of scans and resolution to get the least amount of noise in the spectrum??

For an FTIR instrument (Nicolet iS50 or Bruker Vertex 70V) how do I relate the noise reduction factor to number of scans and resolution of the spectrometer? And does the number of scan have to be power of 2?
