I would rather say that neither fiber, nor cast posts reinforce the tooth structure. In my opinion, that I've made after reading literature, they only help you in retention. The good aspect about fiber posts is that they have a similar elasticity modulus to dentin, to tooth structure compared to metal posts the might produce vertical fracture in some certain cases. I only use fiber posts lately in properly selected cases.
fiber post don't really reinforce the weak tooth structure ; but in many cases it's a better option compering to cast posts . I t depends how much of tooth structure you have got left .
the best answer and a lot of practical information you can find in the book
" Fiber Posts and Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Compendium of Scientific and ."..
By Marco Ferrari, Lorenzo Breschi, Simone Grandini
I can reccommend it to you as it answered a lot of my questions ans concerns .
No post can reinforce the endodontically treated tooth. The primary function of any post irrespective of material is to support the core material. Post and core is used when the available crown height is not sufficient to support crown prosthesis. We may go for crown lengthening, orthodontic procedure, core build up or post and core in extreme cases where other options are not possible. In such cases post and core is used but that is not for re in forcing the tooth structure it is only to gain retention from root and to support the core material for further procedure.
Kelvin i agree with you that moisture is not significantly different in endo treated and sound tooth .....but the amount of tooth structure lost in canal shaping and access opening and other procedure may have influence in making tooth brittle...
