I've just started to perform fEPSP recording on Schaffer collaterals/CA1 dendrites and I wonder what is an adeguate stimulus duration in order to record correct baseline fEPSP? For now I use 2 ms long stimuli every 10 seconds.
Normally when people say "spike" the mean "action potential". But I think you are talking your electrical stimululation. If so, I would say typical stimulus durations are less than 1ms, typically 100 to 500 microseconds.
I agree with William. 100-500 microseconds is the usual range. 2 ms is a bit too much. In the lab we usually use 200 microseconds and the effects are reliable. I would start by there. However, within the 100-300 microseconds range you shouldn't think of pulse duration as an important factor.
